Two Blogs in Two Days ... Facebook?
And both at obscene hours of the night!
Hope everyone out there is better than well this Wednesday. Another late one here after an evening shift bracing for another shot of March snow. Some snow is possible later on Thursday in northern IL as well although it doesn't look to be too much at this time. It is tough to keep precip as all snow this late in the year.
Well I hit the road tomorrow ... check that ... later today for a two day spotter training and office outreach adventure. I'm spending the night tonight in Turtle Lake, Wisconsin. What a name. The only reason this town has hotels is because it also has a casino. Not much for hotels otherwise. Should be a fun trip though as I preach the Mother Nature gospel that has been taught to me.
Also ... am debating on something. This is far from important and some will feel I am already blowing it out of proportion bringing it up in a blog. But believe me, I am the first to think it far from critical. I am just reacting, at least partially, on all the comments and even e-mails I have received requesting my presence on facebook or myspace. I have no clue why, other than it is a craze that folks think everyone in the world should be on. I have received requests from some of my closest friends to join. Just last week, Jimmy (friend from Paducah) sent me a myspace request ... mind you filled with vulgar language. Bobby from Huskie country has claimed myspace is the way to go as well. Big Slim I believe is a myspace user. Good friends Holzner and Wuj, the most surprising of the bunch, have a facebook account and think I should try it out. Now this comes from the two guys whom I have battled technological advances with. For instance, cellular technology we abstained to 2005. Derek has stuck with his own page and I have heard no facebook or myspace from him. Scruff was a myspace user but now I believe stands against it. Luke swears against it or Facebook. And Spark? Well I don't know if the Moose has a page or not, but if they do, he created it.
I have studied this now during the early part of '08 (loser), listened to some comments, read some descriptions from the facebook and myspace creators, and taken some virtual tours. After all that **drum roll** I would like to start a facebook page. But I want your feedback by responding to this blog as to whether or not this is a wise decision. Now by no means is this going to be an 18 year old girl facebook page. And by no means will this be updated with my every activity and every picture. As you can see I struggle with this page. But I want to focus on making sweetcornforecast.com even better and more renowned, so with that I need to give it a little PR so to say, and I think facebook may help with that. Also and more importantly, I think facebook is a great way to help stay in touch ... not the only way though. I think a few select friends prefer this way as the primary means. Finally, the features on tagging pictures is sweet. Another intriguing feature is the ability to create and join groups such as "Ziggies is my favorite restaurant" or "Huskie Marching Band Alumni" or "We Think Luke and Miles are Partners". But I am not 100% sold, so let me know. Heck, if you read this entire blog you have to respond! You obviously have too much time with your day!!!
Take it easy all!

I'd say go with facebook. It seems to be the classier of the two. I started with myspace, but really, it seemed immature. What, with all the glitteriness of the sparkly personalized icons and all. Granted, the pages you visit probably won't have that problem.
In conclusion, go with facebook.

Having felt as though I "passed the torch" so to speak to Todd in terms of keeping in touch via a mass dialogue, I can only say that I am very much against getting a myspace/facebook account. If I learned anything about speaking to the masses, it was that people look forward to getting an "actual" e-mail or blog entry......more so with Todd than myself. If people make themselves available on a public forum, it may become redundant or boring perhaps. I look forward to hearing from Todd, but knowing I can just check in on what he chooses to put on a webpage seems somewhat less interesting than the anticipation of an e-mail with a good story. I apologize, Todd, if this comes off as trite and lacks written slams against O'Brien, but it's very important, I believe, to stick to a sense of individuality which you possess well, and doing something that is now so typical and to simply "go with the masses" seems would be an unlikely move on your part. But believe me, if T O D D were to have a myspace/facebook page, you'll bet I'll visit, despite the differing opinions. Oh yes.......O'Brien is a disgrace to the Irish people.

Miles,
I love it. You're totally right though about these accounts and why I have been anti for so long. It is just not our type of thing ... post our life out there, updates every other day or so, and expect the world to continually check in. Like you said, an e-mail is much more personable and hopefully welcome. We will see though, I still am on the fence but your opinion helps to partially restore what we have always thought. Much appreciated, like a wine cooler at Frizols.
Now I certainly disagree though that there is anticipation for my e-mails. I still read your final mass e-mail at least once a month! Usually when I'm feeling a little down, for some reason it causes an immediate cheer up! Arkansas, Wal-Mart, redhead ... haha!
How upset the Irish must be of their Illinois representative...

Facebook is the route to go. My band is on Myspace, but I am on Facebook. You need to get one. Even the Great JVG caved last week and joined the Facebook crowd.

As an infrequent visitor to the swc.com I would have to agree with Miles on this one. I need to visit this site more often, even if it is simply to help MTF in avoiding poor decisions.
The problem with starting a myspace/facebook page is that swc.com will likely suffer as a result. I would assume that it may be difficult, at times, to keep up with the website itself. Why give yourself more work and something else to update? Also, joining myspace simply to become a member of "Ziggie's is my favorite restaurant" is pretty lame.
I'm not a member of either forum and plan on never caving in. I hope you make the right decision and abstain.

Personally, I'm against facebook &/or myspace. Don't cave Todd and continue to focus on the website. And don't forget, Lucas is not the only Irish representative of Illinois.

Down with both of them. Much like OB, I am in constant protest of both of these sites, and all the other cloned sites like them. Dont succomb to the pressure there Todd!!
Glad to see not only one update, but two in a few days. Just amazing. Hopefully this is not a phase and the entries keep coming, unlike OB.

I am glad to see the majority is anti-facebook/myspace, and I agree with Full in that the SCF site may suffer as a result, and you put it well Todd when you say people will unlikely check in every day for an update. And I hope Vis is correct in saying hopefully multiple entries in a short amount of time is just not a phase. And O'Brien may not represent the Illinois Irish population, but he definitely is an extremely poor representation of Mendota Irish people and has spread that filth among the Bloomington-Normal area as well. What a disgraced individual. Take it easy Todd!

After reading the past month's worth of comments on this post, I've come to realize that maybe I didn't know just what I was suggesting when I told MTF to go with Facebook.
I was under the impression I was helping him decide between MySpace and Facebook. NOT between those two forums and his website. I would never purposefully sway Todd away from his site. Never.
I hope I can be forgiven.
And my new advice is: Keep the site. Update the site. Forget the silly fads of the day as they will fade away into jokes we remember with a sigh at our 20th high school reunion.
Provided we have one.
And provided we go.

I've always worn jewellery but for a time it went out of fashion. Like grungy and punk bands didn't wear jewellery because it was stupid.
